Being Busy Bees & the Big 130 | MAR-APR Wrap Up

We are on the brink of June yet we still get together as a team and talk about how exhausted we are from March and April. The past couple of months have been a whirlwind of events, promo and new endeavours. To save you the trouble of having to read through it all, we spent a lot of time documenting the past couple of months in photographs and videos. Enjoy!

Join the Team – Become a HFB Ambassador!

As a project we always have our sights set on the future – always considering what our organisation can become and how we’re going to get there.

This year we launched the HFB Ambassadors Program at our Afternoon Ladies Tea event.

A running theme in our meetings leading up to 2016 is that we saw no reason why we couldn’t pack more boxes. We set our target of 130 boxes per month and alhamdulillah we hit that target on the 27th of March 2016!

And this was largely due to our amazing ambassadors and their dedication.

Our Ambassador Program is open to any one in the community eager to make a positive contribution locally. The task is simple: provide 5 boxes of food per month and do it however you want. Throw together a sporting event or put on a BBQ; host a morning tea or hold a bake sale.

Our ambassadors are encouraged to think outside the box and entertain any or every crazy idea that will engage the greater community in the conversation about food security for all. We’re actually pretty excited to see what fun ideas people come up with! 🙂

Check out these videos for a snippet of what went down at our Ladies Tea, hear one of our ambassadors speak & find out more about how you can get involved!

World Food Day 2015 – Oct 1

October 16 every year marks World Food Day.

The day is deddfabb627437fe442203110cf27126f8bicated to raising awareness about hunger in today’s world. It’s a chance for you and I to stand together with others committed to eradicating hunger. This sounds like an ambitious goal which is why the team amass support from many many parts of the globe. By giving each year a theme, World Food Day sheds light on the many causes of hunger around the world. This year’s theme is “social protection and agriculture: breaking the cycle of rural poverty”. Put simply, the focus for 2015 is on developing support systems that allow farmers and their families to be less affected by poor yields and unforeseen events (like floods). Some practical examples of how this works:

  1. The Action Against Hunger crew provide tools and education for farmers to grow healthy crops.
  2. The same guys provide emergency therapeutic treatment to malnourished children.
There are many other examples – just google “world food day 2015”
Did you know that almost 5 million children under the age of 5 die of malnutrition-related causes every year?
Let’s do something to end hunger in our lifetime. Share this image to raise awareness. #wfd2015

#1 | HFB Perth Reads…

Much misunderstanding and ignorance surrounds the issue of living in poverty; as this week is National Anti-Poverty Week, efforts are being made to break down barriers and encourage conversation to educate and break the stigma. In an article by Orlander Ruming, the issue of the cost of living and, by extension, the cost of housing are discussed as major contributing factors when it comes to struggling families in regional areas.

“Without access to housing people find it almost impossible to get and keep a job, to send their kids to school or to address any other ongoing issues in their lives. It’s a key foundation for addressing disadvantage,” NCOSS chief executive officer Tracy Howe said.

Until next time,
